Fill Your Cup: Practice a Daily Check-In with Yourself

I am a nurturer; I am quick to come to someone else’s aid to offer comfort or solutions or both, and in the past, I would often put my own needs behind others in my life. A few years ago, I learned the importance of noticing and caring for my own needs and began regular daily check-ins to make sure my cup was filled so that I could support others without draining my energy. Here’s what works for me:

  • Determine a time of day that you can consistently practice your check-in.

  • Give your check-in a fun, catchy name. I like alliteration, so My Moment, A Second for Sarah, Tracy Time, or Self Sooth Sesh are very satisfying to me; make it personal, make it yours.

  • Set a phone alarm or calendar reminder to go off at the same time every day and then honor it.

  • When the alert comes, stop what you are doing and take two minutes to get things in order (kids occupied, phone silenced, and put yourself in the most ideal space available to you at that moment).

  • Set a timer for a length of time you can realistically be “off the grid” – 5-15 minutes is ideal, but if you can do longer, then do!

  • Begin your moment with 1-3 cleansing breaths (inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth – audibly if possible).

  • Check in with your body – take a body scan (feet to head or head to feet) and notice what you need in this moment; notice what will nourish you in this time you’ve set aside for yourself. Food/snack/water? Gentle stretching? Sitting in stillness with the sun on your face? A brisk or leisurely walk?

  • Do that until your timer chimes. (Make it a pleasant chime so you close your time on a pleasing note.)

  • Close with 1-3 cleansing breaths.

  • Gently integrate back into your day.

Practice this every day. Consistently. Unapologetically. Refilling your cup allows you to show up as your best self, benefiting not only your well-being but also the well-being of those around you.
