Mind Over Mat(ter): How to Find a Yoga Class that Works for You

There are many styles of yoga, and variations in teaching styles can create vast differences among similarly named classes; one teacher’s Vinyasa Flow might include fast-paced transitions and advanced balancing poses, while another teacher’s Vinyasa Flow might lead students through a mindful, slow-moving sequence. Finding a class style and instructor that suits your goals can be challenging. Getting clear about what you hope to gain is a good place to start, and then, do your research.

If you are visiting a studio, read up on the instructor bios and class descriptions; instructor bios often reveal the style of yoga the instructor has training in, and they may include personal preferences and tendencies; for example, an instructor may share that they enjoy working with students who are looking for challenging poses and sequences. Websites and social media can also be a good place to learn more.

Studio class descriptions offer insight into what to expect from each class. Studios often use creative names to set a vibe or mood for the class, so reading the description clues you in to what to expect from a class named "Every Now and Zen" or "Yoga on the Rocks." Some titles are a little more straightforward; for example, my “Restorative Flow” is described as a stretchy, slow-paced, vinyasa flow with a mix of restorative poses that will leave you feeling relaxed at the end of class.

Vinyasa

The word “vinyasa” translates to “place in a special way,” which is often interpreted as connecting breath and movement. In vinyasa practice, the participant intentionally connects to their breath as they transition up and down on their mat, moving through standing, seated, and lying-down poses. Vinyasa flow can be practiced at varying intensities, ranging from slow and mindful to dynamic.

Yin

Yin yoga is a slower style of yoga in which poses are held from one to five minutes or more. Yin targets the joints and connective tissues of the body; the practice is designed to increase circulation in the joints and improve flexibility. Yin is a great balance to an intense workout, as it offers deep stretching and holding. Holding in stillness benefits the mind as well as the body.

Restorative

In restorative yoga, the goal is to completely relax into poses, which are held for five minutes or longer. Restorative yoga is perfect for a rest or self-care day, and can benefit those who need to chill out and de-stress. Props are often used to support the body in resting comfortably.

Restorative Flow

A restorative flow class offers a blend of slow vinyasa followed by restorative poses. Participants first practice a slow, gentle flow to stretch and prepare the body for rest, and then sink into prop-supported poses to allow the body and mind to relax and rest.

Chair Yoga

Chair yoga modifies traditional yoga poses so they can be done while seated. This makes yoga accessible to individuals who may find standard yoga poses challenging, including seniors, those with mobility issues, or people recovering from injuries. While it may seem simple, chair yoga offers a range of benefits, including improved strength and balance, enhanced flexibility and mobility, and stress reduction.

Guided Meditation

In guided meditation, the guide leads the practitioner through a session, offering a structured approach where the guide’s voice and instructions provide a point of focus. Instructions help the practitioner to remain present through breathing exercises, visualizations, body scans, and more. Guided meditations are a helpful way for those who find silence daunting to enjoy the benefits of meditation.
